If you want an older version on the Mac App Store, follow these steps: Go to App Store, then go to your user (bottom left) and click on Purchases. From there, reinstall the last compatible version. However, if you haven't installed the app before, you'll need to find a computer with a newer version of macOS. Sign in to the App Store on that computer and install the latest version of the app. After that, you can go back to your older Mac  and install the older version of the app from your purchases area.

However, this is not always the case. If the app has been made available for previous versions of the operating system, you can disregard that message and proceed to tap the download button. Upon doing so, the App Store will present a message asking if you would like to download an older version of the app.
